New chair of Accelerated Access Collaborative appointed

Lord Ara Darzi has been appointed as the new chair of the Accelerated Access Collaborative.

Lord Darzi, a former minister at the Department of Health and Social Care, takes on the position from Sir Andrew Witty, who resigned in March after taking on a new role as CEO of Optum. As chair, Lord Darzi will oversee the joint government and industry body, which identifies ‘breakthrough’ medicines and technologies for the Accelerated Access Pathway, a package of support providing a fast track route through the NHS approval process launching later this year.

The project, which comes after an £86 million funding package to help innovators of all sizes, does not create any new infrastructure, but builds on existing initiatives such as NICE’s Fast Track Appraisal Process, the NICE/NHSE budget impact test, EAMS and the CDF.
