NHS England Consultation on Items Which Should Not be Routinely Prescribed in Primary Care

NHS England have opened a consultation on the items that should not be prescribed in primary care. Last year 1.1 billion prescription items were dispensed in primary care at a cost of £9.2billion. In England there is considerable variation in what is being prescribed and to whom, with some patients receiving medicines that are ineffective or in some cases dangerous, for which there are other more effective, safer and/or cheaper alternatives. NHS England has partnered with NHS Clinical Commissioners to support Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in delivering a nationally co-ordinated approach to the development of commissioning guidance in this area to ensure consistency and address unwarranted variation.
