Spanish National Health System Urged to Reduce its Toll of Temporary Staff

Last September, the European Court of Justice ruled that temporary contracts concluded to cover permanent needs as well as those provisional contracts concluded to cover a permanent staff position, contravene the European Framework Agreement on fixed-term employment.

This ruling would affect around 170,000 full-time health care workers currently hired as ‘temporary’ staff, who are employed using renewable contracts with the corresponding downgrade of their labour rights and/or benefits.

As a consequence, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality along with the 17 regional ministries of health have agreed to create a working group aiming to accomplish this sentence and study solutions to reduce the high toll of temporary jobs in the public health care sector.
