Science and modern industrial strategy in the UK: Theresa May speech

 

On 21st May 2018, UK Prime Minister Theresa May gave a speech at Jodrell Bank. The speech focused on British scientific achievements and its future industrial strategy. Two key points from the speech are:

  • AI and data: the UK will use data and artificial intelligence (AI) to help with the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and dementia by 2030. The ambition is to diagnose early stage lung, bowel, prostate or ovarian cancer of at least 50,000 more people a year
  • Science and Brexit: The UK would like the option to associate with European programmes such as the successor to Horizon 2020 and Euratom R&T. In return, the UK seeks to maintain a suitable level of influence in line with it’s contributions and associated benefits
