NHS Providers warn of no-deal Brexit

A private letter from Chris Hopson, the Chief Executive of NHS Providers – the NHS trade organisation has warned of the risks if no deal is struck as the UK exits the EU.

The letter was sent to the head of NHS England (NHSE), Simon Stevens, and Ian Dalton who heads NHS Improvement (NHSI), and was leaked to the Times.

It highlights the interconnected nature of pharmaceutical supply chains and the current reliance of the NHS on EU staff, and warns of the risks of an exit without extensive preparation for the impact of possible transport and travel restrictions.

The letter stresses the need for adequate contingency preparation for the event of a deal not being agreed between the UK and EU, and criticises an alleged lack of leadership from NHSE and NHSI in not communicating with NHS trusts, and not coordinating a plan at national level.
