Health Canada expands recall of some cardiovascular drugs

Health Canada has recalled eight more blood pressure medications that contain the active ingredient valsartan due to possible contamination with a likely carcinogen. They say the likely carcinogen, N-nitrosdiethylamine (NDMA) could increase the risk of cancer through long term exposure above acceptable levels.

The recalled drugs were supplied by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals, a Chinese company that ships valsartan.

Individuals who take valsartan are encouraged to carry on doing so. Anyone taking from the affected batches is advised to contact their GP to discuss potential alternatives.
