Ontario bill proposes disclosure of financial relationships

The Ontario legislature has proposed a new bill, the Strengthening Quality and Accountability for Patients Act 2017, which, if passed, will look to enact the Health Sector Payment Transparency Act 2017.

The act will require:

  • the disclosure of financial relationships between healthcare professionals and pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturers; and
  • the reporting of various information concerning such relationships, such as the parties’ names and the value of (or an estimate, if non-monetary) and reasons for any such transfer.

The reported information must be made publicly available. More details, such as the manner and frequency of reporting, will be prescribed by regulation.
