One of the biggest challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry is antimicrobial resistance (AMR), where pathogens become resistant to multiple drugs. Infections by these pathogens cause the deaths of 33,000 people per year in Europe.
The Federal Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (BPI) have released a paper on antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance. The paper includes a discussion of the problem, the development of new treatments, and the existing solutions such as reducing the misuse of antibiotics. It states that the German pharmaceutical industry has estimated 18 new antibiotics will come onto the market in Germany between 2011 and 2020, including some for bacteria that had been drug-resistant.
