Pfizer adds Chief Digital Officer to executive team

Pfizer has announced its new leadership team, which includes the addition of a Chief Digital Officer. The move follows a change in leadership at the company, with CEO Ian Read announcing he is to step down at the end of the year. His successor, Dr Albert Bourla, has now announced his new team.

Given the growing strategic importance of deploying digital technologies in research, discovery and business processes, Pfizer is appointing a Chief Digital Officer responsible for creating and implementing a strategy that accelerates and improves our digital capabilities so we can deliver more value to patients. Lidia Fonseca will join Pfizer’s Executive Leadership Team in January 2019, as Executive Vice President, Chief Digital and Technology Officer. She is currently the Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President at Quest Diagnostics

The news follows similar moves at Novartis and GSK in 2017, highlighting the increasingly important role of digital within large pharmaceutical firms. Digital strategy has several key roles to play:

  • Communications – spreading awareness of a company’s products to improve access
  • Integration – allowing the company to operate more efficiently using digital technologies
  • Analytics – use of large datasets to better understand and solve both science and business problems
