Research conducted by the University of Newcastle, and published in Lancet Public Heath predicts that the need for social care amongst over-65s will more than double over the next 20 years.
Interestingly, the report suggests care requirements will actually fall amongst those aged 65-74. The increase comes largely from those aged over 85. Amongst this group, the prevalence of conditions is predicted to remain constant, but care requirements will go up drastically due to improved survival rates and the need to manage complex and often co-morbid conditions. Many of these conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, introduce complex care needs, which compounds the challenge of caring for an increasingly ageing population.
